I have recently purchased a 50 (US)gallon tank which had a pair of convicts,1 yellow Lab and a few others which i still cant identify even though i have been looking through this and other websites. So first of all if anyone knows a site where i can find a whole lot pictures of cichlids with their names than let me know.
But the main issue i am having is that the Convicts had a lot of Fry which resulted in my sisters falling in love with the little guys. But as the days pass by i have noticed that every day the numbers are decreasing. I have seen the male to pick up the abnormal once and moving them to a safer spot but in general from about 50 fry i only have 10 left.:-(

After a lot of reading i had decided not to put them into a Mesh net which i had used for my old tank with guppys because someone had said they have had bad experiences with them and that the fry go crushed when attacked by the more mature cichlids. So i put in a plastic breeding container(again i used it for my guppys) fill the bottom up with gravel and put one of the fry in.It seems to be doing ok but if anyone has any suggestions please please let me know.:look:

Thanks

BTW:This site has givin me more info than any shopowner and fish keeper had givin me.THumbs up. :hyper:

ok, i'm guessing the guy at the LFS didnt tell you the convicts bred like rats and never stop until you flush, seperate or totaly inialiate them completely....
so unless your prepared to house hundreds and yes, in a years time you can have hundreds of them, been there trust me!!!
GET RID OF ONE OR THE OTHER, MALE OR FEMALE, which ever you fancy most make it your sisters, she can name it.
many of us in the hobby, IF we still have cons it's because we like to breed our own LIVE FOOD, yes.. that means we actualy FARM the fry to our larger preditory fish, even doing this we found that often we cant keep up with the amount of breeding these RATS are doing.
my question to you is...
gonna keep em & buy more and more and more tanks, or will you get rid of them, put other AFRICANS with the ones you already have???
good luck

Lol,so i guess these Cons are the Guppys of the CIchlid breed. I got flooded by guppy fry a year ago and just ended up trading them in for plants and supplements at the local pet shop. To be honest i had decided to seperate the pair in a month or so because i can see it coming that either they are gonna take over the tank or they are just gonna fight anything and everything in my tank and kill others.

But to bring up only a batch of Fry was my quest, as it is just nice to see em Fry grow up get their own personality ( wimp or pimp B) )and so on.
So tell me how do u bring up ur Con Fry to use for live food?U put them into a seperate tank?or just let them be in the same tank?

thanks
