as the title says newbie therefore loads of questions, what temp should i have for my guppy frys type of filter and ornaments sand, gravel plants water changes etc i warned you loads of questions

Okay. Here goes! :)

Temperature is good anywhere from 75-78 F or so. I think a sponge filter is best for a fry tank, so that they can't get sucked up. It's worked well for me in the past, so I would recommend it. Otherwise, you could use a HOB, or other filter and just cover the intake with a breeder net, or Pantyhose, or something similar so they don't get sucked up.

Ornaments can be anything you want...Plants are good, as are rocks, wood and general places for them to hide. Thick plants seem to be afavorite with mine. They can disappear into there, and fool their brothers and sisters as to where they are! Sand is the best substrate. With gravel, they can sometimes get stuck in between the pieces and get crushed. Bare bottom also works, and some find it easier to clean.

Fry need good water quality, and they are sensitive so lots of water changes! Daily ones are okay, once every 2 days is okay too. Just make sure the tank is always clean. You can do water changes using a airline tubing siphon you make, or a turkey baster so you don't suck up the little babies. Acclimation to the tank is impotant too. Take a loooong time...and they'll be better off.

Also, fry need to be fed often! 3 times a day at least, more if you can. When they are first born, Tetramin Fry Food or Hikari First Bites are best for them. Baby Brine Shrimp is good suppliment to this, or you can just feed that but it's best to vary. Once they grow up a bit, you can add in finely crushed flakes and Freeze-dried, frozen, or Live foods, such as Bloodworms, Brine Shrimp, Tubifex Worms..etc. However, don't feed them just this. These are all high protein foods, and they can cause them to be constipated or get bloated. Fry are sensitive. You can also try small pieces of blanched veggies, like cucumber, zucchini, peas...etc.

And if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask in the Livebearer section, and I'm sure someone will help you out!

(This more of a livebearer section thing, but anyways), as for the questions :) ;

a. the best type of filter in my experience is the Fluval 1 filter as the current on it is not strong enough to suck fry in yet it is large enough to filter the tank adequetly for your average batch of fry and is easy to take apart and clean :) .
You will need to cycle the tank tough before you put any fry in and have the stats as stable as posible before they go in as they are very sensitive to water quality, i suggest you do a fishless cycle because it is faster to do and you don't have any left over cycle fish or have to put any of their health at risk from the cycling process.

b. The perfect temp for fry is 25degrees, some people use 26 as it helps speed up their growth although i prefer mine to grow at normal speed, 24degrees is good for adult guppys but can be a little on the cold side for guppy fry.
Fry need to be acclimatised much longer than adult fish due to being so small and sensitive to such things, you should aim to acclimatise them for at least 40minutes.

c. The best substrate for guppy fry is either fine sand or nothing at all as fry can get stuck in between gravel and also can get sucked up by the gravel vac when cleaning, if you have a thin sand layer all you have to do is stir it up with your hands once or twice a week and then do a water change  . Obviously if you have sand it also allows you to have plants and the fry will appreiciate having a little shade and somthing to be interested in, they like fine leaved plants the most as they hide inbetween the leaves.

d. As far as feeding is concerned, TetraMinfry or "first bites" by hikari are the best and some of the most nutritious foods that offer all the nutrition the fry need for their first 2-3months of life and if you can feed them both, the better :). For a realy good start in life though or if you have any fry that aern't taking to dried foods very well, liquifry for livebearers is very good for their first 2weeks of life  .

Hello,

I have a bit of experience with small fry tanks myself, so I'll try and give you a few pointers.

To start off with, I have found fry tanks with bear bottoms much easier to clean then if you were to have sand or gravel. Fry need to eat often, so you'll find that there will be a lot of uneaten food/fish waste at the bottom. Use a small air hose to siphon this up. Another thing that I do in my fry tanks is put a small apple snail in with them (if you have one that is). They will not bother the fry, and they'll eat any uneaten food on the bottom. This will however produce for waste. Although I find cleaning up after the snail is easier then cleaning up the uneaten food.

If you do not have any fry food what you can do is put normal flakes in a little baggy and grind them up with your fingers (very fine, like sand). I have never had problems with guppys not eating it.

I also agree with the above post regarding the sponge filters, they work awsome for fry tanks. Good luck with your new fry.

Colen.
