I have seen a few posts that talk about giving the fish vegetables, which ones are good for community fish. I try to feed the best flake food but I am sure the the veggies would be a great addition to their diet. Thank you.

You can add cucumber, courgette (zucchini), squash, lettuce (preferable not iceburg as it is low in nutrients), spinach, peas (parboil and split the skin to squish out the inside, great home remedy for constipated fish), some people have been successful w/cooked potatoes. It's really a matter of trial an error, you just have to put some in and see what they like.

A note on preparation: most vegetables need to be softened in order for the fish to eat them, there are two preferred ways. Parboil: slice your vegetables and submerse them in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, scoop the veggies out and place in ice water to stop the cooking process. The only disadvantage to this method is that some nutrients are lost in the boiling process. Freeze: slice your veggies and stack w/waxed paper between layers (to prevent sticking), store them in a freezer bag, place in freezer until frozen (duh :D ), then remove the amount you feed your fish, let it sit out until thawed, or place in a cup of tank water to speed up the process. Presto, softened veggies w/all their nutrients.

I usually leave my veggies in for 4-6 hours, if no one has shown any interest, I either try again a different day, or call it a bust and try something else.
