Petco sold me a fish that looks like a front for $3.00. He is a baby, maybe only 2" long. I noticed his breed while reading about cichlids on this site and looked him up. I think the guy who sold him to me thought he was just and "assorted cichlid". I have him in my 29gal. with my 3 yellow labs right now. My three yellow labs are only little babies and they are around 1" to 2". What should I do. I live in an apartment where the rules are I can't have a bigger tank on the second floor. should I care for him until he is too big for my tank then sell him. he is really beautiful fish. I have also never see one of these before. What should I do? you can view my pics of what i think is a front at my yahoo pics. please let me know. thanks!

You really shouldn't be buying fish if you don't know what they are! In a 29 gallon tank very few mbuna will actually work, and any mbuna from an 'assorted' tank is bound not to.

You go lucky, since a Front will usually have no problem with the Labs. It's up to you whether you want to keep it, but I'd find a home for it sooner then later.

Yeah, I think I'm going to sell him when he gets a little bigger, before he outgrows the tank. I heard they take a long time to grow, so until then I am going to enjoy him in my tank. :kana:

DId you mean a frontosa??? cause if it is then you definetely got a sweet deal...we sell our baby frontosa for about $15-25 depending on the size.....you don't need a big aquarium, screw the apartment law..if your paying rent...just make sure that you get a good sturdy stand, anyways a 75 gallon tank is not big for me...lol...

one frontosa can live in a 29 gallon by its self. ( i read that in Aquarium Fish Magazine)

Yeah, I mean a Frontosa. He is very happy right now in my 29 gallon with a few yellow labs. He just joins them when they swim around the tank like he is one of them. It's so cute because he is do different from them but he dosen't seem to even notice or mind. LOL

Sounds like an exciting setup, a big fish floating around in a tiny tank.

Take care of the frontosa for now it should take some time before it gets bigger maybe in a year or so, then just find a better home for him or trade him in to your LFS i'm sure you'll get a pretty good deal with it.....I don't think a frontosa should be kept on a 29 gallon tank when it's fully grown.....they look a lot better when they are seen through a much bigger tank..IMO...

When it's time to sell the frontosa, how much should I ask for him?

Fronts sell for heaps, well here a 2" front goes for about $40, but with fronts they need to be keept in groups of 5.

as VIP mentioned fronts should be kept in groups... i started with 1 8" front oin a 55G which after reading and researching even more about these guys i got absolutley addicted to these fish and other cichlids......within 2 weeks after getting him i got a Frontosa tiny one from my LFS he was 1.5" at the time and he was free due to a story :) but anyways he is about 3: now they grow quick when small but slow down when they reach 4" which takes me to my 3rd frontosa addition and a tank upgrade...i drove 2 hrs for these guys...which i got 2M 1F 4" frontosa for $95.....they are housed in a 75gallon till i set the 6ft front tank up which will house more....they are extremely happier in a group even though i had to seperate the big one from the trio for 4 days at first due to territory issues he was having.....and yes today i removed one of the 4" Males due to the 8" one beating on him the 4" i s currently with my Yellow Labs which is temporary due to fronts being slow fish and labs very hyper...it works out but i think they are better in a species tank there is nothing like a big frontosa tank with a large colony
