with my water being as hard as it could possibly be, would it be possible to have a tank of softwater (water supplied from LFS) and slowly adjust the water by drip method to change it to the hard water im used to. whilst the fish are still in it, never had softwater so completely dumb on this matter. any info on what needs to be done will be greatly appreciated.

only just thought of this but our lfs, wouldn't they have the same water as us? Most of Dorset has hard water. Somebody said brita filter it but i don't know if that's them mucking about or being serious!

Most fish will do fine is hard water. You should test your water and the lfs water for ph and gh. When you add new fish gradualy add a little of your water to the bag. When the water parameters are close dump the bag into a bucket thru a net and put the fish in your tank. This could take an hour if the parameters are considerably different. If they ar close is will only take 15 0r 20 minutes.
If you realy need soft water you can mix your water with RO water. You can buy ro water at wallmart and other stores for about .37 a galon. Don T.
