:blush: This may be a dumb question but I've been thinking about it all day;

When I read posts on this site I read alot about Bettas in pet shops being kept in small cup things and that it's better for them when they are brought and put in bigger tanks

that's great (I don't mean keeping them in small cups!) but...

In the pet shops that I've been in they have been kept in large tanks with other fish

which kinda makes me think

does it affect them badly buying them and keeping them in a smaller tank? I don't mean tiny small but smaller than what they were in in the first place. And also the tanks I've seen them are big enough for filters too, does that affect them badly going from filtered to unfiltered?

:blink:

IMO, i think the Bettas might feel relief to move to a tank of their own from a large tank with might fish that nip the bettas fins etc.
And about the filters, i dont think it matters if you dont have a filter if the water is frequently changed.

Agreed. They probably keep the bettas in a bigger tank just because there's other fish in there with it.

P.S. Does anyone know if it's okay to keep 2 female bettas together?

I think they keep them in bigger tanks cause in the UK it's illegal to keep a fish in anyhting less than 10 G :blink:

no that cant be right- LFS nearest to me has them in little square boxes, just big enough for them to turn round in :(

And you're in the UK?

I heard this awhile ago as an answer to the reason why someone said the home for a betta should not be a 1G minimum, but a 10G minimum, because anything less than 10g is illegal in the UK..

*shrugs* maybe I'm wrong... or maybe it's not a very well known law and your LFS is actually breaking it...

No idea if it's against the Law Chrissi (is that true?) but yes, I'm in the UK.

The law is in Rome. It came about because of goldfish given away at fairs and the small goldfish bowls.
