Frogfish Colour Change

awesome, that's a dramatic colour change! glad he's coming on well though mate. ribbon moray's looking nice too. :good:

He certainly is an amazing fish!
Am I right in thinking that plenty of research is needed before buying one as it can be quite difficult getting them to feed?

Hey, just a quick question:

How big is that tank?

I want to set one up, too, but I'm not sure about the size.

Awesome fish, by the way!

The tank is about 20 gallons, it's 5 feet long, 12 inches tall and 8 inches front to back. It is also drilled and serves as the fuge for my new reef tank, so it is connected to a display tank that is 60x24 wide x 18 tall and a sump that is 48 x 12 wide by 18 tall.

A 20 gallon is the recommended tank for A. maculatus.

Plenty of research is good, but the feeding is just a matter of trying. If you don't mind feeding live then it is not that difficult. You have to be wary of things like taking them out of the water (they tend to ingest air the die) and not having a massive flow rate in their tank. But once the tank is up and running and the frog is settled they are not the most demanding of fish.

Thanks Andy, I was just curious.
There was a Frogfish at my lfs a couple of weeks ago but it died after a few days, I think it may have been that it wasn't feeding. :/

I was just watching a special on PBS (public broadcast) last night on an island near Costa Rica. Anyways, the underwater photographers caught some pics and video of a huge group of frogfish exactly like yours perched on a cliff-like colony of orange colored corals. The really neat thing was that they'd perch there for hours with their little lures out waiting for something to swim by, and they were all varying shades of orange to match the coral they were near. The photographers even managed some close-ups that showed the frogfish were darker at the bottom and lighter on top to match the shadows and light, awesome fish. :good:
