Friends Overstocked Tank

I just went over to see my friend whom I haven't seen for a while. He showed me his new 5 gallon fish tank. It was stocked with

1x Betta
1x Swordtail
1x Corry Catifish
2x Guppies
2x Small Tetras

All the fish look really small now but soon their be huge! I told him to do 25% water changes every week, maybe more. He cycled it which is good and I took a look at his filter and it seems to be able to handle a 10 - 20 gallon tank. The tank is still crowded though.

Moral of Story: Make sure to know when friends are buying fish tanks so you can tell them how to do it right.

One of my friends has a 6" common plec, 1 4" clown loach, 3 3" cherry barbs and 3 cardinal tetras in a ten gallon. He wouldn't take my stocking advice.

WOW..... Maybe he will take your advice when his fish start to die...

Maybe. His loach looks like it's going to explode and all it does is hide in this one ornament ALL the time.

I'm surprised they are still alive. It's not fair the non-experienced people who do near to no maintenance have like no deaths and then us out here who want the best for our fish and feed perfectly and do weekly water changes have deaths. not fair. He feeds them nothing but flake. He's had the tank 4-5 years and has had 3 deaths.

Wonder if I could buy it off him. On second thought I don't really want a 6" common plec and a 4" exploding loach.

People never seem to take advice on board. I don’t know if its because they are defensive as they have realized that they have made a mistake but it drives me a bit crackers!

My sister in law has a 22lt tank with 1 x mate betta, 3 x female betta, 2 x male guppies, 2 x female guppy, guppy fry and a crab!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guppies are shredded to bits and the tank is filthy but…she wont take any advice on anything from the stocking levels to the water changes and maintenance. I tried taking to her bf about it but he said he has done some research and its fine. Her LFS has said this is fine and not to worry and she takes there word as gospel.

Local restaurant to me has a tank thats between 150-200 liters and it has:

1 x juvenile pacu
2 x albino tinfoil barbs (adult)
2 x normal tinfoil barbs (adults)
3 x large clown loaches
4 x adult parrot cichlids
3 large silver dollars
1 x common plec
1 x juvenile red tail catfish.
2 x adult jewel cichlids

The fish are so big they cant turn around without bumping another fish so they just dont realy move. The Parrot cichlids were spawning too and everything was so tatty and miserable.

I cant go in there any more my favourite restaurant too! They wont listen to me as they dont maintain their own tanks, they have someone else do it for them.

I remember when I had 3 male swordtails, 3 female platys, a clown loach, a common pleco, and a chinese algae eater in one tank......what was I thinking! Clown loach we rehomes to a family that had 8 clown loaches in a 6ft tank along with the common pleco....then I bought the 40g that I have now..

A big casino near me has a huge tank that has a terrible mix of fish.

2 discus
6 spotted silver dollars
4 upside catfish
4 -8 tinfoil barbs
4-6 red tin barbs
1- super sick Fahaka puffer
15-20 malawi
10-20 tangyanika
6-10 common plecs
4- what looks like red wolf fish
5- blood parrots



The poor Fahaka was lying on the bottom with it's skin melting off and it's beak horribly overgrown The discus were on the floor in a cave with HUGE holes in their heads and bodies....The big fish were all flashing....They have the lights set to change color suddenly,which seems to shock all the fish...


I walked up...and around it..and started to cry. I have put in an email this morning and will not stop until they fix it.
