i've always loved pufferfish and would love some in my 300L freshwater tank but most in lfs seem to be brackish. are there any true freshwater only puffers i can add to my community tank?

I'm not really up on puffers but it seems that the Amazon Puffer may be the only one that will work in FW and a community tank. As a general rule, I don't think puffers are community fish as they can be very aggressive.

Dwarf puffers! They are tiny little guys though (still have tons of personality)
Again they are puffers so they will nip fins and arent community fish.

You cannot "add" puffers to a tank with other fish, i'd suggest a small 10 gal seperate for puffers ONLY.

Dwarf puffers are fw but since you should keep them by themselves why not brackish?

Most puffers are fin nippers and cant go along with any other fish, only other puffers.

I kept a 15 gallon with 3 dwarf puffers and 2 Bumble bee Gobies, in slightly brackish water. Looked really nice.
My son bounced a Hot Wheel off the front and spider-webbed the entire face of the tank. I scooped the fish out while I drained the tank before the front fell out. I had no where to put the fish! Every tank was full. Added them to the least hostile tank I had and when I checked in the morning I had one Gobie left.

I had the dwarf puffers for 7-9 months and they never got bigger than 3/4" They were so small most people didnt know they were in the tank. Visitors would comment on the Gobies being such pretty fish, I had to point out the dwarfs.

i think dwarf puffers would end up as meals for my pictus catfish!!!!! and they would get lost in a 300L!!!!!

I triedfour freshwater puffers about a year ago, but they all died. They were very small, and got sucked up the filter.

On another note they were very agressive and bothered fish many times their size. I noticed that the store I got them from discontinued them due to the many problems.

I don't recommen them

The only puffer that is somewhat "community safe" is the south american puffer, Colomesus asellus. All fish have different temperaments and personalities though, so watch the puffer closely when it is introduced to the tank and have a spare tank to isolate it if necessary.

If you have the tank and environment to house puffers in, I would wholeheartedly recommend them. What they require in terms of care, they entirely make up for in personality. I have yet to find a fish that has more personality than a puffer, especially the large species.

Its not only can they get along with fish even if they did they would be stressed they need their own territorry and they can kill fish many times thier size they are not a begginers fish . I have 2 witch are in a ten gal and I did alot of research before hand also they can be picky eaters . You need sand in your tank gravel can cut them. you need lots of hiding places even with just two. So like I said Research research research. Check out www.puffers.com Pat
