Freshwater Fish, Ammonia, And Nitrite

I think this pretty much says it all: "I am only 13 after all." While youth is no excuse (my 11 year old son would NEVER think to treat living creatures the way this guy does), I think it explains a lot about his attitude and reasoning skills.

Fair play, I missed that bit and you're right. My post would have been tempered somewhat had I realised. In fact I have deleted it.

Lynden, if I may? You strike me as very intelligent, and very well educated- for an adult, let alone for a 13 yr old. Amongst your friends you are no doubt in a different league. However, it would do you no harm to remember that you have yet to be educated in some areas, where others here are qualified experts. This is not a reflection on you, nor is it a critisism, it is the situation.

I imagine given the curriculum, that some of the info in some of the posts in this thread you may have not understood fully?

There are two ways you can deal with that- to ignore/argue, or to query/enquire/ask for specific explanations. The first breeds ignorance and gives a negative image of you. The second will help you, not to mention reflect well on you. Make the sensible choice- you are talking to some trained scientists here and you are not restricted in what you can learn by slow people in the class.

OMG, I've turned into my Dad.

Ahh Lynden, here we go again. Once more you post something based on what you want to believe as it seems contrary to popular belief and is from your mis-understanding of science. You are then shot down in flames by scientific research, but refuse to accpet it.

You actually mentioned nothing about killing the fish in your first post, you just said people shouldn't worry. Indeed this quote sums up your position:

However, I have found that, over the years, that it does not effect most freshwater fish unless at extreme levels (above 4.0 ppm).

I would say that "effect" would include long term issues such as increased succeptibility to disease. Also you state 4.0ppm, whereas Bignose has shown that ammonia readings of 3.5ppm are lethal at a pH of 6.

Maybe you should check what you wrote previously before suddenly changing claims and claiming no-one has discounted what you said. ;)

And to think you have the audacity to moan at someone else for flaming...

Maybe you should stick to causing long term osmo-regulatory problems by keeping a coral reef fish in freshwater.

You have lowered to the point of not being worthy of reply beyond this statement.

Thank you for giving me that benefit. But the bracketed section is incredibly infuriating. How do you know how I treat animals? Your eleven-year-old son must also not allow flies in the house to be killed, must be careful to put wild, just-observed animals back exactly where they were found, move toads off the road, put more importance on moving endangered insects outside than his mother's temper, think long and hard about feeding live grasshoppers to his Oscar... you get the point. I am often called pathetic by ignorant people for how much I care for things that many would call insignifigant.

The reason that I exposed my first fish to such high levels is because I did not know any better. My fish all thrived, so I feel that it is not a very big deal. I'm sorry that I tell people what I do, but not really sorry because it worked just fine for me. But I am sorry that I picked on you, Boxermom; I could have been far more diplomatic, but I instead chose the low route, and will try harder next time (to be higher). I am 14 years old; I shant be acting like a 13-year-old

Sounds like sage advice. I draw most of my self-esteem from my intellect and tend to be rather arrogant and be bold, especially on TFF. Thank you also for giving me the benefit, but I am by no means restricted by the incompetent Western curriculum :hey:

And that concludes my make-up post. I hope the feeling of this post will last longer than they usually do :shout: No, just kidding, this one's permanent. :)
