Here you go check this link out. http/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anguilla_(genus) I personally have a tire track eel, with these howver remember they grow to be 2 foot. A smaller one would be a piacock eel or a stripped piacock eel. Another fish would be a knife fish, I have one of those two, some species can grow to twelve inchs, heres a link for those. http/www.elmersaquarium.com/10knifefish.htm I have a African knife fish he hides all the time though. A good way to find info besides here is here www.google.com
Any of the spiny eels would fit the bill. My favorite is the Fire Eel, they are nearly black with red stripes and dashes on an eel like body which grows to nearly three feet. Black Ghost knives ar very good at showing the wavelike motion you are looking for. Clown knives grow large but do not hide in most tanks and also have the wave like fins.
Yeah, I have had some kuhli loaches before..They are pretty easy fish to deal with, they are bottom dwellers, but the only bad thing about them, at least i found, is if you want to see your fish, these aren't the best for you they are nockturnal so they hide during the day, and the only time you can actually see them is at night if you turn on a light in the other room, but are quite fascinating when you can actually see them moving.
I love kuhli loaches! Like the previous poster said they can be pretty adept at hiding. If you're looking for an eel-looking fish you could take a look at some dojo loaches. Those are adorable. I think they can get kinda big though.
