I dont have any fish yet as my tank is stubborn about cycling (my freind at the fish store has said hes never seen anything like it) its taken about two months!
Im about three fourths done I think

Anyways I plan on getting a halfmoon betta and a cherry shrimp or snail.

I wanted to have neon tetras but I dont want the little buggers to pick on my betta as I heard they will

What is another colorful substitute I could get as freinds for him?

I have a ten gallon tank and I have a couple of amazon swords and a cave thing but not much else. I plan on having lots of hiding places.

The focus of my tank is color and I already have a blue green red them going

my bettas happiness is the most important cause he will be the highlight of my tank

I will get pics of my setup soon!
thanks!

I have a community tank with female betta and an assortment of other tropical fish. I added neon tetras (8) and within minutes of releasing them into the tank, the female bettas both had a tetra in their mouth. They were trying their best to eat them. Had to fish out the rest of the tetras and move them to another tank. Only managed to rescue 3 as the bettas ate the rest.

All of my male bettas are too aggressive to keep in with other fish. Maybe I just haven't found the right combination of them yet, but most people say you shouldn't keep male bettas with other fish.

One of my females (5 total in 3 tanks) is so nasty, she has to be kept alone like the males. She attacked every fish I had.

Some other people may be able to help you out, just letting you know about my experiences.

Maybe a pitbull pleco. they're small and docile and the betta couldn't really hurt them i think

edit: *agrees with above post* :)
I've only had two experiences trying to keep other fish with bettas. The first time was when I was very small and I didn't really understand anything about fish...but I remember my betta doing fine with a couple of small sucker fish. The suckers pretty much keep to themselves. I might consider trying that again if I had a large betta tank.

The second time was several years ago when I tried to put a few neon tetras in with my betta Onofrio. Silly me . He immediately killed one, so the others went into a community tank with some black skirt tetras. I think Onofrio enjoyed the excitement though haha.

How many litres is your tank? I have in with my PK 2 panda corys and 2 bristol nose plecs. The PK is the biggest out of all of them. They share because the corys and plecs are too small for my big tank. I will transfer them when they are older. Corys make good buddys for bettas apparently. Why not try a white albino cory??

Not on its own, corys are schooling fish... pygmy corys are a good choice, but they are black and white, so if you want colour they might not be idea. You could try a khuli loach, they're pretty but apparently you don't see them much. I've heard of ember tetras (which are bright, bright red and supposedly less nippy than most tets) being used but I've never done it.
If it's blue red green, you could do a heap of green plants, a blue betta, and then red platys... platys are pretty good with bettas, they don't usually nip and because they have short fins the betta won't go for them. Red platys are pretty easy to get hold of.
