My friend from work has just given me the above tank. It has an under gravel filter with airstone and motor and I'll get a small heater for it. Can I keep one betta in this? The MTS has really kicked in !!! :hey:

PS Does anyone know if there is a small algae eater which won't eat guppy fry? My fry tank has quite a build up of algae already.

1) i have one betta in a 1 gal with a UGF. he seems to prefer the bubbles (i think it is personal preference. i do weekly 100% water changes on the tank, so there is not much biological filtration going on, but he still likes the bubbles

2) my ottos do a great job on algae and don't touch the fry in the tank!

For other MTS sufferers: Avoid small tanks. You can buy lots and find room for lots. The tanks get smaller and smaller untill you have 50 bettas each living in a liter of water - It's happened to some members on the forum. That being said, I really like small tanks, but I like bigger ones better.

Hi glolite :)

You can't beat a free tank!

Have you ever thought about getting dwarf frogs? They are delightful little creatures that are fun to watch and very little trouble to keep. Three of them would be very happy in there. Here's a link with lots of good information about them:

As for a small algae eater, you can't beat otos. They are little, but do a great job of eating algae. I've recentlty got some and they just amaze me! :D

Thanks for all the replies. Thought about dwarf frogs but you have to feed them live bloodworms  eew me too squeemish. Think I might go for a male betta with a snail for mate. Will keep you updated when it's set up.

I have the exact same tank set up (minus the heater, though I think I need to get one), and my betta loves the bubbles as well. He gets downright depressed if they are off!

Wow, a free tank! I might, at some point in the future try to get a similar second hand tank for a betta... Now I've officially decided that my tank would make a Nice Home for a betta, I will probably catch the betta bug if I get one....

Hi glolite :)

A betta would be an excellent choice for your tank!

In case you might want to reconsider getting the African Dwarf Frogs in future, I want to tell you that, while they thrive on and enjoy live foods, they don't really need them. HBH makes a tiny pellet called "Frog and Tadpole Bites," that they can eat instead. :D
