Hi Guys

wondering if you could help. I've got various fish in my tank. Various types of tetra's, Guppys, 2 Small sharks and 2 allege suckers.

Only a few days a ago I spotted one of my heads and tails tetra's become really fat and staying away from the other fish near the heater. I asked a local fish shop advise me tetra's don't usual get pregnant so my attention pointed towards the female guppys I have. I found a 1 fry inbetween the heater casing and manage to save it and put it in a guppy plastic storage which sits in my tank, Also in the guppy storage i've seperated the two females into this storage as i think there pregnant? They have the black stone mark on the rear of the belly, both of them have it...not sure..am new to fish. Am I doing this all right or am i causing the fish stress?

Thanks in advance

Depends how big the storage is? I just leave the female guppy in the tank and the fry are usually born between 10-12pm around the 26th of the month (How do i even know this?!) so i keep an eye open then and fish them out. I think putting the females into the storage could cause stress and ideally you don't want all of the fry to survive as you'll soon be overrun.

As for having a black mark near their backside, they'll probably be pregnant. Sometimes they can have phantom pregnancies where they show the black mark but nothing is born. When the back end starts squaring off and becomes a darker black then they'll soon give birth. Pics would be nice if you can manage it mate.

Thanks for your reply Frazer. I'll take some pictures tonight and post them up. The storage is a little plastic box i brought from the local fish shop. Apprently it used for breeding guppys..

I was doing some reading and i was thinking putting in some java moss to help the fry. Would you recommend this?

take the females ou tof the trap, they cause them un nessasary stress which could lead them to misscarry, add some plants in with the fry make it feel more secure :)

I have java moss in my tank and a flat moss ball  and the first batch of fry I had all hide in it, even though there to big to get eaten. I would put moss in if you can, it'll make them more comfortable and more chance of them surviving.

Thanks again. I'll be looking to buy some moss over the next few days. Also release the two mothers.

Also what other plants are good for the fry to hide behide?

yeah release em from the trap i made that mistake and got no fry. java moss is your best bet. the black bit (gravid spot) i find is never the best way to tell when their going to drop fry. so you could be putting the guppies in the trap a week or even two weeks early. its more the shape of them to look for. mine know whats what now and let me know when their going to drop they lie on top of the heater wink at me and then start dropping them out lol

Guess what? I've come home from work and i've got roughly about 11 fry sitting at the bottom of the guppy breeding tray... I've seperated them to another container as i dont want them to get eaten.. Any more advise would be great?

I've also left the two females in the contain as i think there's more to come...

To be honest mate as long as the containment area isn't just a breeder trap then it should be okay. The females will be stressed going to a new area but shouldn't be stressed enough to mis-carry their young if there's enough room. How big is your breeding container?

Nice one on the fry, i was over the moon when i got my first batch. Just be careful not to be overrun as i was getting to that point, but my local store and members on here are going to take my current fry population (53 i counted!).

More due 26.10.2011 if my calculations are correct. It's never ending and most of the time while you're doing a good thing catchng the fry for them to survive, i feel like i should leave them and let mother nature take it's course as it would in the wild. Completely depends on your situation as you may want to increase your stock by breeding and not buying! I have enough but like seeing the males show off hence the presence of female guppies.

The breeding container is average size i would say. On the box its says its for guppy breeding and i brought it from my local pet store. The thing am struggling at the moment is where to store the fry. Like i said on my previous post am storing them in a plastic container at the moment and mounting it within the tank so the fry get use to the temp within the tank. Not ideal but it will have to do as am all New to this
! I was thinking of getting a net cage kind of thing. I've seen one on ebay and i think they sit within your tank but isolate the fry from the fish. Worth buying do you think?

Yeah that's fine for the fry. They will be fine and won't get stressed, it's just when you put adult fish in there then you start having problems. I use a turkey baister whenever i see the fry, suck them up, plop them in the net. They probably don't even know they've moved!

Thats a great idea. I'll have to give it a go.

I've got another question. I've also got another 2-3 types of different fish in the tank. Red Head tetra's, Heads and Tails tetra's, 2 Silver Sharks. Hand full of neon's. Do you think these fish will ever breed?

Tetra's very rarely breed in captivity.

I've had a shoal of Cardinals for 18 months and i've seen no fry or even breeding. I suppose it could be done if you recreated perfect conditions for their natural habitat but sounds like hard work to me!

Actually most tetras are quite easy to spawn; it's hatching the eggs (they're light sensitive, so must be kept in the dark until they hatch and the fry becoming free swimming) and feeding the fry (they're so tiny, they need microscopic foods, like infusoria, to start with) that are the ticky parts.

You can only do it in a dedicated spawning/breeding tank; in a community the eggs normally just get eaten.

OP; how big is your tank? I'm worried about your silver sharks; do you know they grow to over a foot long and should really be kept in a shoal? The sucker fish may also be a problem as some of them also grow very large (2 foot for gibbiceps, for instance).

Hey... I've attached a Video of the Tetra's ...to get your view on them.. The sharks are only baby's are the moment..i think..the tank is roughly a 90 litres. Am feeding the suckers and the rest of the fish small amounts of food, I've been told if i carry on this they won't grow massive so quick...

Also i think one of my female guppy's is pregnant...not sure if she layed the fry or another female..
