....dont know whats wrong with them so i did a water test and it says i have high nitrite.

how do i lower this down? everything else seems to be fine so dont know why fishys are dying :(

help please :-(

Nitrite can soon kill a fish, what test kit are you using, how high is the reading.
How long has the tank been set up
How often do you maintain the tank.
Any fish gasping or laboured breathing.
A water change for now.

im using a dip stick i bought. lol very technical term i know
the tank has recently had a water change about 2 weeks ago.
the fish that isnt looking good is gasping for air :(

Should be dong a gravel vac and water change once a week.
I would get going now.
Liquid test kits are best more accurate.

Do a water change now as Wilder says.

Have a few question to get at why your nitrites are so high:

-How big is your tank?
-What kind and how many fish?
-Any new additions?
-What type of filter are you using, if any?
-Do you dechlorinate your water before adding to tank?

ok water change it is...

my tank is 350 litres
i have 6 tiny Jack dempseys in it and a common plec (i now too many JD's will get rid of some when they pair up)
no new additions but the jack dempseys have only recently been moved to this tank from another tank (the other tanks nitrites are fine)
im using the filter that comes with the juwel trigon 350
and yes i do dechlorinate the water before adding it to the tank :)

Sounds like you're doing everything right. :) I'd only recommend more frequent water changes. Once per week while your tank and fish are healthy. For now, once per day to keep nitrites down.

How old is your tank? New tanks will have high nitrites. They will go away once your tank is cycled.

This may seem like a stupid question but do u add bateria in the tank to replace the amount that may have been taken out. It says to add 5mls of bacteria per 10 litres every week, so should i add 1.5 ml every week after ive topped up the dechlorinated water.
And...what does the term to condition your water mean, deos it mean to dechlorinate???

If you do a water change will have to work the dosage out to the water removed that all, and add the correct amount.
Yes conditioner is declorinator.
