Hey all

I have a 6 scats and 4 monos that are getting increasingly larger. The issue i have is that they are eating a massive amount of flake and never get full. It has gotten to the point where feeding the rest of the fish in my tank has gotten impossible as they steal every bit of food placed in the tank.

Is there a healthy, more substantial food that will possibly fill these guys up so that the rest of the fish can eat?

I feed my monos and archer fish Hikari's Cichlid excel. It's quite meaty from what i can gather and fills them up. Scats I would imagine would need more greens though, maybe a small head of lettuce? I have to feed something that sinbks for the other fish though, prawns or mussels that are thoroughly defrosted.

I used Hikari Cichlid Gold for monos and scats when I kept them. As Fella says, the scats also need some greens. Tinned peas, Sushi Nori, blanched lettuce, spinach, etc will all work well. It's also a good idea to feed shell-on crustaceans like krill. These are filling, but because they have a higher ash content, won't produce so much ammonia as, say, shelled mussels or prawns.

One last thought: your fish will demand food rather more often than they need it. Just because they look hungry, doesn't mean you have to feed them. One meal a day should be fine for both these species, especially if there's some Sushi Nori or lettuce on a clip in the tank for them to nibble on.

Cheers, Neale
