I decided to wait till the morning to add the ammonia.... 1 thing i have just noticed is that there are a lot of foam bubbles at the top of the tank.... is this normal?

This has happend ever since i added the de-chlorinater

Tank has a airstone, filter and heater which is set at 28 degress

Could be from the dechlorinator, but i would have thought this would clear up in a metter of minutes.

Have you added any ammonia yet? If so, which ammonia are you using?

Have you added sand or anything recently?

This is a brand new tank.

Have not added ammonia yet (got the homebase ammonia)

When i woke up this morning, there was even more foam building up.

I have just turned off the air pump, and the foam is slowly disappearing

Every time i turn the air pump back on, i get a build up of foam at the top of the tank.

Only thing i have added to the water as of yet, is the dechlorinater.

Can anyone explain this? PLEEEEEEEEEEASE :D

Hi m8, I had this when I 1st set up my tank a few months ago and it just disappeared after a day or so.
I think it is just down to the chemicals in new water and should disperse once your tank starts cycling properly, just give it time and don't worry too much about it at the mo.

Its been like this since sunday....

I had the pump switched off over nite, no bubbles when i woke up this morning.

I have just switched it back on, and immediatly foam bubbles have appeared. A fair bit aswell ..... Its like ive got soap in the tank.... i doubt if adding too much de-chlorinater has this effect?

Hi Steve,

Too much dechlorinator can have that effect. Try putting dechlorinator in a bucket and then filling the bucket from the tap. It will do the same thing. It does it when the dechlorinator gets vigourously agitated. I reckon that is what is happening in your tank. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you really dont like it, turn down or switch off the air pump. They don't do very much towards oxygenating the water anyway, they are mainly for aesthetic purposes.

BTT

OK, ive just added the ammonia.... do i test it with my liquid test kit straight away? or leave it for a few hours?

I would leave it for half an hour or so to let it mix in properly and then test. Good luck. :good:

When I first setup my tank it did the same thing. So what I did was take the tank and rinse it out and even scrub the walls a bit to get everything out. Then add your water and turn on all your filters, pumps etc... then after a day if there is no foam add the required amount of dechlorinator. For some reason with my dechlorinator I only use half the amount that they suggest and my fish and tank seem todo ALOT better.
