For a few months now I keep finding tiny, tiny flies floating in my tank. I couldn't figure out where they were coming from ,as there aren't any flies anywhere elsi in my apartment! But finally I think I have put 2 and 2 together!! I have tiny, minuscule worms in my tank, which I was told were flat worms. But they must be fly worms (eg. the worms turn into flies at some point). Is this correct? Also, what should I do about this? Is there a medication I can use to get rid of the worms/flies, or shall I just keep scoopin up the dead flies a few times a week?? Thanks in advance for you help :)

Is it possible to strip the tank down and sterlise the substrae, do you have another mature tank.

Check your filter. I have the same thing in late fall sometimes except mine aren't that tiny (I've seen smaller ones up north).
In fact, when I cleaned a filter not long ago I found a few small black fly larva in it.
These become small black flies of some sort (not houseflies)...I've never looked them up to find out exactly what they are. I've seen them under the hood or floating on the water until somebody wants a live lunch! But I've never seen a dead one.
I'm almost certain they came in on some peaches I'd picked from my trees in early fall. It always seems that time of year I start seeing the larva in the filters.
I just run some hot water on the filter bag....kills them instantly.

Thanks for your replies. I don't have a mature tank, but now have 2 more kinda parasites!! See my another post, I need help desperately, as need to disinfect the tank, but don't have anywhere to put my pleco&axelotl!

Yes, these fly worms sound similar, they turn into tiny flies, my friend thinks they are banana flies. And now there is so many the worms are everywhere, and every day there is tens of dead flies floating on top of tank water.Euggh

If I had as severe a problem as it appears you have, I'd take some samples to the pet shop where you purchased your fish or plants (if live) & ask them....or if you have a County Extension Agency they might be able to identify the flies for you. You could also start searching the internet & see if you can find anything that resembles them.
The larvae I have are black & maybe 1/3" long....they become small black flies with clear rounded wings, maybe twice the size of a fruit fly.....I think I found 3 or 4 in the filter bag when I cleaned the filter last week but I've had more in years past....I have not seen a single one since I rinsed everything in hot water.

You need to find the place where they're laying their eggs. You can't eliminate them by putting any poison in your tank...it will kill your fish.

One more thing I just thought about...do you have plants that you keep outside in warm weather & then bring them inside? White flies are sometimes a problem too. I had them on my geraniums one time & then started finding them in the tank. That was many years ago....I treated the plants & finally the flies were gone.

I haven't read your other post yet but am certain someone here can tell you (or already has) what to do about your other 'bugs'.
