i have aquired a 54Lt tank with a fluvel filter, it still had the fish in it when i went to collect it,(the owner wanted me to see it wasnt leaking ect) the owner put fish in thier new tank and emptied the water for me to take away, now my question is, does the tank/filter need to be cycled again before i put my fish in, do i need to change the sponges inside, or rinse them? i know this is a silly question but, hey it is me

If the filter media etc has been kept wet/moist then I think you might be okay. You might have some die off. A big NO-NO would be to rinse the filter media, especially under tap water. If you don't have any fish in the tank, you need to continue to feed the bacteria in your filter ammonia if you aren't getting fish for a few days. You could do this by adding some flake food and letting it rot.

i already have a smaller tank with fish in, i just want to move them to the bigger tank (so i can get more fish, im not becoming a addict....honest :D )the tank still had fish in when i went to get it and i set it up the same day, i was wandering if i would have to go through the rigmarole of a full cycle again, i only have 2 guppys anyway so they are happy in the small tank at the moment

How many fish did the tank have in it, and how long has it been empty, OP?

it had about 5 massive fish in there no idea what they were, the tank was empty for about a hour max whilst i drove home with it

you should be safe to add your guppies then; just moniter the water carefully for a few days :good:

HI..THIS HAPPENED TO ME years ago.it's always risky transporting an established tank full of fish. I would have been wary myself. once the aeration has been stopped, the biological filter will begin to diminish-die. The fish would 1st need to be put in an already established holding tank at your place for a while, until you've re-established the new tanks bio features/
EX- tap-safe-filter start-temperature. I say all this because a tank full of fish is a tank full of money, and who needs to tip money down the toilet huh/

hope this helps. :hyper:

thank you, the fish are in and the test kit is on standby for regular tesing :good:

as long as you have the media that was in the tank when you bought it...and not new media, yes you done need to cycle it again, if its new media then you will need to cycle it again.
