I have a U2 and I am confused about which of the filter medias I should change if any ( I understand about not changing all and washing it etc). Who else has U's and what do you do.

I've had a U3 for about 18 months and I haven't changed any of the media; it's just not neccessary. I did take out the carbon pads and replaced them with filter floss that I do change occasionally and I added some more of the ceramic rock stuff but the sponges just don't need replacing, ever.

Filter maunfaturers always say that to get you to spend more money on their products!

You just change the out two pad leave the middle one alone. Better still just was the old ones in old tank water.

I wouldn't bother using the carbon or nitrate sponges tbh; you'll just lose the bacteria when you replace them. I'd just use the cirax until you can get sponges. Is this in an established tank or one that's cycling?

Thanks, which filter floss did you get?

All filter floss is the same. You can either buy a bag from your LFS or you can buy a huge roll of the stuff for ponds from ebay which works out cheaper in the long run :)

As above, I've been running a U3 since June last year and have only replaced the carbon pads. The other ones are ok but when it does become time to change them (i.e. falling apart) change them one every few months rather than en masse.
