Fluval Tropical To Marine Conversion

I have a fluval 1000 tank and a fluval 205 external filter.
i have been keeping cichlids for a while but im getting bored tbh so i have been looking into getting marines and think it could be achieved eventually. but my main worry is that the lighting may not be good enough and that getting it changed will be hard going.
my question is that am i better off getting a new tank or does anyone think that i could change my tank without piling up a huge bill?
(salt,treatments,live rocks etc. will not be a problem getting them)
help??

How many litres is the tank, and what is the current lighting? T5 or T8? etc?

As betta said, what lighting do you currently have? I along with several others on here keep reefs under t5 lighting, we just don't keep the harder sps, which require more light. My sister keeps a softy tank under t8 lights, so it really all depends what you want to keep

Ok, so what is the wattage on the T8 lighting?
TBH, a Fish Only (FO) system or a Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) can get away with any lighting.

Are you intending on keeping corals? If so, with T8 (depending on Wattage) you could keep Soft Corals, like Mushrooms, Zoanthids etc

So what we need to know is the wattages and how many T8 Tubes do you have?

both at 36"-30W or

Indeed, with T8 lighting you could keep a fish only with live rock or a reef with some of the lower light softies - saying that though Trod, my sister keeps a euphyllia under t8 (it is very high up though.

So you could do as many of us do - start off with what you have and then upgrade as you go along
