Hi

We have a BiOrb aquarium at the moment and to be honest don't like it that much (warped views, no room on base, etc)

So we're upgrading to a normal rectangular shaped aquarium, something like the Fluval Roma 240.

Main reason we'll probably go for this is we want to put the aquarium on top of an existing sideboard in our lounge, and therefore don't need a base. From what I've found out, Fluval seem to be the only ones who sell the tank without a base (at this 240L approx size).

BUT, with the tank on the sideboard we will obviously have NO access to the underside of the tank.

Could this be a problem?

Anything other problems anyone can think of with placing tanks on existing furniture would be helpful.

Cheers.

So long as its a good quality piece of furniture to be able to withstand the weight requirement then it shouldnt be a problem. However you will need access to the external filter, so you would either need to make a hole in the back of the sideboard for the pipes/wires to go thru so the filter can sit underneath the tank or have the filter by the side of the sideboard (it must be lower than the tank).

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes the sideboard is made of solid oak so can handle the weight no problem. And because of this and it's cost we certainly won't want to make holes in the back of it to access the filter!

The external filter wouldn't be able to go behind as it would be impossible to reach down to it (it's up against a wall), but could go to by the side as long as the piping access is suitable and long enough.

Otherwise is it possible to fit an internal filter instead? I know nothing about such things to be honest.

Cheers

You could use a powerful internal filter, although you would probably want to use two on a 4ft tank.

The hosing that comes with an external would certainly be enough to allow an external to stand to the left or right of the sideboard on the floor next to the tank without causing any problems.

if you buy the proper fluval you dont have any access to the bottom anyway, so should be a problem

dont even know if ive read this properly, tho i did 3 times
do you mean access to the base of the tank, the actuall glass bottom will be a problem??

dunno why you would be worrying about that,as whatever stand its on apart from a cast iron frame is going to stop you getting at it.
but then again if you mean how to access the cupboards in the stand to get to your filter.. thats up to where you put it, as long as its lower than the tank ( check the website for the filter you have /want to see what the max height difference between your filter and tank should be)

some filters are really good looking and yes i sound mad but wouldnt be an eyesore if placed in veiw of the rest of the lounge etc

hope between us we`ve managed to answer your question :)
