Hi all,

I am wondering what would happen if I accidentaly had this heater on when out of the water...

Do they have a safety cut out?...do they keep heating and heating or does the glass break?

Thanks

You generally need to turn a heater off 30 minutes before removing it from the water, else the rapid temperature change will cause the glass to break.

Its for a non fish related system I am building where the tank will empty (water tank) and as doing so a float switch will turn the heater off..if the float switch were to fail I am wondering what the worse thing is that could happen i.e thermal cut out etc

Well, as I said, generally an aquarium heater needs to be turned off for 30 minutes to allow it to cool before being removed from water, else you risk the glass breaking. I've heard horror stories of heaters exploding before.

If its not for a fish tank though, there are probably better solutions involving a thermostat that won't be so breakable.
