Fluval carbon pad

how long should i change it? i mean the "real" carbon ones made by fluval said to change every 1 week, i broguht another kind, they look alite, a black pad do i change that every 1 week too?

or should i use the little carbon pellets as the "extra filteration" instead?

EDIT: i am talking about the carbon pads for the fluval 4+

If you desire chemical filtration then you should replace the carbon every few weeks. However, many people just stick to filter floss. The bacteria colonize on the media and they function just as they normally would. You need just change the media once every few months (only partially) unless it is really dirty or if your tank is overstocked.
