believe it or not .... I'm thinking of trying to get by with a 6500K GE fluorescent for a while (until I can find a fixture on sale on EBAY) this is for my reef tank that only has live rock in it ......

Has anybody tried this before?

price difference : General Electric Daylight bulb $5.00 ..... Coralife fixture $60.00 ....

Late reply, but that bulb will really promote nuisance algae IMO

well .... I guess I'll keep looking for a decent fixture ..... so far there is very little algae in my tank ..... the live rock that I put in there looks LESS green than it did (the tank is only 10 days old)

well ... I had an anxiety attack over the nuisance algae .... and it did get pretty bad .... but then something happened -- I started to get a small patch of green algae -- and now at three weeks the brown algae has largely disappeared and I have about four by two inch patch of green algae -- 1/2 inch long. So I just had brown algae because the tank was too new.

;)
