Fluidized Bed Filter

I think they are overkill for the average freshwater tank. In the right setup, in centralised systems or critical reef tanks for example, fine.

Without knowing more about your model, it is dificult to say, but normnally they can't be used alone. They require a mechanical pre-filter, and they act as a biological stage.

I would probably have asked before I bought one!

Overkill as in its going to work really good? i hooked up a 800ltr/h powerhead to it, the tank is looking more clear and theres no signs of any ammo no2 no3 so far, the tank is 125g, i will get the model tomorrow but i know its a otto.

Fluidised beds are biological filters. It will take time for the bacteria to build up on the grains just as with any other biological media. They work by keeping the grains in motion so the grain are able to grow bacteria on all of their surface. That is why pre filters are essential. You get any crud into the FB, it stops being fluidised. Once that happens, it's efficiency drops through the floor.

You may be better off asking in the marine gear forum. Marine keepers use them more often then f/w keepers.
