Flowing Sand Ornament

I have just set up one of these in my tank. It is the mount fugi one. I have followed all of the instructions but when i turn the control valve up to increase the air flow to get the sand going there are a lot of huge air bubbles that escape from the back. This is really noisy and is disturbing me and my fish. Does anyone have one of these and can anyone advise on why this is happening. I have tried more water, less water, more sand and less sand but none of these work.
