how do I tell how many watts my light fixture can support. its a stock lighting system that came with the tank but I've heard you can change the color bulbs so if anyone could help me with this question it would be of great help thanks. dave

Most light fixtures will have a stamp or sticker that tells you the max wattage rating of the fixture. Do not go over this. It is usually safe to buy the same size and stlye light in a different color temp (the K or Kelvin rating of the bulb) and still be within the correct wattage of the fixture.

can you use multiple standard furlecent fixtures to make the wattage per gallon higher or no thanks for all the help guys. dave

You can but you will have to add alot of them (and they probably won't all fit) to do most corals. But they work great for a FOWLR or FO tank.

hmm any recommendations on a lighting system reasonable affordable to put on like a 75 gallon tank that would support corals. thanks.

It all depends on what livestock you ultimately would like to keep. If you are leaning towards reef I would go for T5 or MH lighting so that you do not have to buy expensive lighting and then upgrade to more expensive down the road.

I'll second that crazylece, VHO is also an option, I would try to stay away from the power compact fluorescents.
