well im thinking i will either use flourite or eco-complete for my new substrate but is one really better and do they both have to be covered with a toplayer of something? i like the way the eco-complete looks and sounds like it has a lot of iron. but can i use it only? and does the flourite have to be covered?

Both are very good its really down to personal preference, the Eco Complete is used on its own normally you wouldnt use a top layer, the flourite can be mixed with other ordinary gravel, 50/50 is good, just make sure the grain of the gravel you mix it with is pretty much the same size as the flourite or one or the other will just end up as a bottom layer eventually, you can off course also just use the flourite on its own if you have the spare cash.

thanks zig. i think i will go eco-complete since i like the look.
