hi everyone, going sort of low tech planted with my little 8g betta tank, it's nothing spectacular but I'm working on it!

just upgraded the lighting and started dosing with flourish, flourish iron and flourish excel.

was just wondering does the time of day that I does with flourish excel make any difference? I know a lot of people only have co2 on in the day cos that's when plants are taking it in, does it work the same with flourish excel?

:)

If you're just dosing the ferts once a day, it's best to do it in the morning so that the plants can be using it up during the day. Shouldn't think it'd make too much difference if you dosed at night though, they'd use it the next day, but i generally prefer morning.

that's what i thought and have been doing, thought i'd just check though :)

What exactly is Flourish Excel? I thought it was just a fert, but from what i've heard it sounds like some substitute for a Co2 system? All information on it is greatly appreciated, but please don't be too technical so I can atleast understand your post, i'm not very good at Science unless it's about energy or electronics.

It provides a source of carbon for the plants, in non Co2 tanks though I think not all plants can use the cabon in this form and some plants dont like to much of it as in when its used to inhibit algae.

yeah it's like a substitute for Co2, puts carbon in in another form for the plants to use.

i don't understand all the science myself, decided i wanted to start using an 'all in one' type fert, was browsing and saw a good deal on a triple pack of flourish, flourish excel and flourish iron, thought i'd give it a go as it was a decent price and I've heard that flourish is meant to be pretty good.

does seem to be making a difference, using that combined with upgrading my lighting and getting bulbs that are good for plant growth, i've not seen the sort of accelerated growth as when Ian's has Co2 on his planted tank, but things have stopped dying which is definately a step in the right direction! :D
