The ebay link isn't working for me, but from the sounds of it you are trying to provide UVB to benefit your fish? Fish aren't quite like reptiles, provided you aren't just feeding them rubbish they will be getting plenty vitamin D from their food - so you don't need to worry about them synthesising their own.

Regardless, 5mm of glass will block practically all of the UVB (as it has a very short wavelength).

UVA isn't needed either (though I can see why it may be beneficial for some species, I've read to articles or papers that say it is)...I'm curious as to why you bought a UV bulb for your fish?

my mistake, its not a vva/uvb bulb, its just a florescent fish bulb, i was wandering whether any of the waves would not get to the fish, i thought it may have been uva/uvb becuase i bought a similair one for my terrapin (although that one is deffo a reptile light)

Why are you worried about certain amoutns of light getting to your fish? They aren't photosynthetic. Generally, as far as a fish is concerned, the light is there purely for decorative looks.

If you aren't growing live plants, the lighting wont matter too much. Just a low watt light for viewing should be sufficent. I would still have it on a timer though so there are about at least 8 hours of darkness in the tank at nite so the guys can rest some.
