Hi everyone,

I need to provide some cover from the light for my killifish by using floating plants. I bought some Salvinia from ebay but this caused me to get pond snails so I threw it all out and used a product to get rid of the snails!

Before I go ahead and buy Salvinia again what are anybodys recommendations for a floating plant? Its only a small tank (under 10 gallon) 18" wide and has a 14watt light.

Cheers,

Kris

Hi everyone,

I use Indian Fern (Ceratopteris (?!))

This is a floater, that reproduces fast, and co-incidentally loves the same water parameters as are ideal for killifish. In no time you should be fishing it out as it starts sticking out the top of the tank.

It can be planted, but I find it best left as a floater, as the plants get big enough, they force themselves down from the surface anyway to let as many of the leaves stay at the surface, so the stems and roots stay submerged.

I'd avoid plants being posted when the weather is cold as they can deteriorate very quickly.

Ifyou can get some from somewhere you'll be well away.

The roots and leaves are good for the fry to hide in too.

cheers
James
