My comet and white goldfish always float to the top i know there full of air i have a air pump could that be the problem?

What temp is your tank at. Goldfish appearently need cold water because it contains more oxygen, or the oxygen is easier to get , something like that. You say they are floating at the top, are they gulping air bubbles from the surface as well?

Try this site, it looked like it has some good info to me (but I know nothing about keeping goldfish) How to Keep Goldfish

thanks they just float and try swim down and they keep floatin to the top

Hi Snotirl

The thing about water and oxygen is easy. As water heats up its ability to disolve oxygen goes down, or in other terms the saturation level of oxygen in warm water is lower than in cold water. This means that fish have to work harder to get the correct level of oxygen in warm water than in cold water. On hot days pond fish tend to stay around water featurs (water falls, fountains) as there is more oxygen in these parts of the pond.

Try droping the temp of the tank, and see if that helps.

Another posibility is that they have swimblader or constipation problems. Do they stay there all the time, or just at certian times of the day?

Sounds like a swim bladder infection to me (just a guess) ....or maybe they ate too fast and got gas, did you try burping them.  sorry J/K

edit: Although I have read about cases where people have had to burp their puffers because the little guys were exposed to air (scooped up with a net rather than a bowl of water) and gulped some in when they tried to puff in fear (they puff up by taking in water, not air as some folks thought), but in your case I seriously doubt that is the trouble.

couldnt be bladder problem because they dont always float at the top

I had the same problem years ago when i had goldfish (first fish i ever had). Basically the reason why it was happening to mine was when they ate to much food. When i starved them for a couple of days, they were back to normal.

Obviously yours could have a completely different problem, but no harm in trying :)

u could be right acculty i might just try that

Yeah it used to happen now and then. Not a permanant thing. I used to net out the floaters, feed the rest and then put the floaters back in. Funnily enough the one with the problem was also a white goldfish. Strange hey?

ye the true he floats like there no tomorrow and he turn from gold to white when i had him tats wierd huh..

Oh well, as long as it gets better :) I used to feed mine a bit of cucumber as well. That sorted them as well

I know coz i have experienced it myself my two fantails do it mostly all the time, I think its because they gulp down too much air when they eat their flake and unable to dispell the air from the air sack, which makes them float to the top or turn themselves upside down but it should right itself in a day or to.

ye they probly take in to much air they look like they do anyway :alien: :S
