My female Hope started flaring. Um I put them in a cup together when I was about to clean (my females are ok in cups for about 10 minutes or less) But Hope started flaring at Penny. I never knew females flare. Do they?

I think they can...but that "frill" thing in girls round their face doesnt go all the way round their little face. Have you posted photos of her?

^I suspect they wanted to see if she really is a girly! :fun:
Some of my girls flare, alot. It's never as impressive as the boys but some are suprisingly good at it. As she's new it'll take her a while to settle into the group so flaring is to be expected.

Oh ok. Because I know she ain't a male PK. She looks nothing like one. lol But she gave a flare to the bigger female. very brave of her to do that to a fish that can tear her in half at any moment.

 You'd love my tiny youngster then! At just under 3 months old she joined the big girls. They're over twice her size (well the oldest are.) and yet she gave as good as they did. She even tries to claim a small part of the tank as her own, although she's far more in with the big group now. It's taken her the last 3 weeks to really become a fully intergrated member and none of the big girls ever so much as nipped a fin.

Hope while she was in the tank with Penny and Chance she was always chased and nipped at (once in a while) but she took it. She did not hide away like Chance does. thats brave of my gal Hope to be flaring when she cant run or hide! lol she surprised me with that. My other female sorta pounced at her but stopped herself before she touched her. I think it was because I was standing on top of them.

They certainly can flare, and often pretty much the same way as the males. although they dont have as much of a beard.
