Hi all! I haven't been on here in ages but I need some help!

My flag cichlid is behaving strange and his smaller girlfriend is slowly going the same way! He sulks in the corner and is very skittish which is very unlike him. I've been going through why he could be acting like this and I've come up with this;
I don't think he's poorly, as he looks fine, water stats are all clear, healthy colours, clear eyes, no bloating or swelling of the anus or rapid breathing and he comes to the surface to eat his foods but quickly hides again.

I did do a big rearrangement of all the plants in the tank as some serious weeding needed to be done. So now there's lots of open space. Could this be the reason? But I remember him being very skittish before I changed the tank too,and I changed the tank about a week ago, could he still be settling in?

Also I have 3 very boisterous Pearl Gouramis who fight and fight all the time, turns out they ended up being M/M/F trio instead of the M/F/F trio I wanted. Could their constant fighting be a cause of his unease? They are also really really greedy at feeding times and hog heaps of the food. I was going to trade in 1 male for another female but now I'm thinking of returning all the gouramis to the shop...would that be better?

The problem didn't really start until about 2 or so weeks ago when the gouramis began to show adult colouration....But I just find it strange as normally the flag would just scoot the gouramis away if they got too close.

I don't have any other agro fish, tetras, rasboras, my angelfish, but he's oblivious to everything except his reflection and people giving him attention. rolleyes.gif

If anyone could shed some light on the matter I'd really appreciate it! I like my gouramis but I'm a cichlid guy so their happiness comes first!

Thanks!

How big is your tank?

Cichlids are very territorial fish, and it seems like when you moved the tank around, that you ruined his little spot in your tank that he calls his own.

So now, since you moved everything around, he has to try to find a spot in your tank again, and that can stress him out, and possible make him act like the way he is.

I am not too sure about the other fish in your tank though, but if the other fish are showing signs of aggression towards your Cichlid, then that could make him stressed out and make him act like the way he is.
