ok so my lfs is having a nice half off sale on LOTS of fishies for their 22nd anniversary celebration, I know I will be getting 5 harlequin rasboras to go with the three I've already got, i will also be getting 3 otos and already in the tank are 2 scarlet dario darios. This is a 20g tank so i think I've got some more room for more fish (expecially since the scarlet darios will be moving out in a bit over a month or so into their own planted 10g) so I want to stock up on fish (for both the 20g and the future 10g) I'll post pictures of the two tanks (the 10g you'll have to imagine having plants in it since it doesn't yet :p ) and then I'm up for any fish stocking suggestions:

20g (for sure 8 harlequin rasboras 3 otos):

10g (for sure 2 scarlet dario darios and picture lots of lowlight plants (crypts, anubias, fern, etc.):

I just want some opinions, some fish I have been considering are Lemon Tetras, Von Rio tetras, neon tetras, checkerboard cichlid, etc. so give me some opinions.

Thanks,

Phillip

i think some corys would be good for the bottom and some sort of bigger, peacefull fish to go with the harlequins for the 20 gallon

i'm not sure about the ten gallon it all depends on what you like.

your tanks are very nice and i hope it all go's well for you :)

yeah so what kind of bigger fish? and I like ALL fish I haven't found a fish yet I don't like. so that's why I'm just up for any type of suggestions, shoot out some names I'll give them a look, see what the lfs has and go from there. So come on guys if you had these two tanks what would YOU put in there?

Phillip

you could try some gouramis for the 20 gallon but i'm not sure which ones would get on with the harlequins, someone else here might know or your local fish shop staff might be able to help you :)

For a 20 gallon, you won't be able to put anything that gets very big simply because he will outgrow it. I would stick with a good school of the rasboros (8 to 12) along with the otos. Keep in mind that otos are delicate and need good water conditions. Also, there probably won't be enough algae in a 20 gallon to feed all of them so you will probably have to suppliment them with cucumbers or zuchini.

I think a pair of Rams would complete that well planted 20g nicely. Remember though, between them and the otos, you need to keep the water very clean.

A school of small, calm fish would be best for the 10g as dithers for the shy darios. 5 danio choprae or rasbora espei would probably work nicely. Plant well and don't overstock... 10g isn't much, especially with a pair of darios.

Hope that helps...

ok I've done rams before in the 20g, as well as kribs, this isn't the first time I've stocked these tanks I'm just looking for new stuff to do now that I've moved, maybe yet another type of dwarf cichlid like the checkerboard this time would go nicely. I should have said that in actuality the rasboras will be 5 harlequins and 3 espei as I've got 3 espei left from the 6 I originally had and can't find anymore espei locally so I'm going to replace w/ harlequins as they are the same body shape a bit different coloring (I had one harlequin at one point and he schooled together w/ the espei's acctually he was the biggest rasbora and seemed to run the pack haha :p ) so the rasboras will be in the 20g.

I was thinking something like whiteclouds or some sort of slinder tetra maybe (something more silver to offset the great red from the darios)
but yeah I knew not much else would go, like you said 10g just isn't a lot but I'm hoping to have such a nicely planted tank that you won't even notice the fish in the tank anyway.

water quality isn't going to be an issue no matter what I pick, as I do between 25-50% water changes (depending on WHICH tank) weekly. thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming, what is the one fish I'm just NOT thinking of :p

Phillip

Apistos? There are about a million different apistogramma species out there in all sorts of colors. I'm probably going this route on my next tank.
Keyhole Cichlids?
One of the smaller eartheaters even?

I've actually kept a mixed school of harlequins and espei as well! It's true, they really didn't seem to notice or care at all...

How about pencilfish in the 10g? They're a bit of an oddball for schooling fish and you've already got a the oddballish dario in there... and they're a good, calm dither fish for the shy darios. just a thought.

Happy to help! Keep us updated?!

haha ironically I was just looking at the pencilfish for the 10g. I'll be sure to let everyone know what I come home with tomorrow, thanks for the suggestions

i highly recomend dwarf gouramis i have got two an they are great

i wouldn't recommend pencil fish i had some in a 12 gallon and all they did was chase and nip each other and not much schooling. If you want small fish that are slightly different to the norm i recommend peacock gobies or sparkling gouramis. For your twenty gallon you could get a group of female bettas or as someone else said dwarf cichlids ! Goodluck witht your tanks.
