I just bought 3 Platys.. not sure what type they are but their head and back end are orange and their middle is white. Anyway I'm having a few problems with them...

* Firstly, I bought a dwarf gourami about a month ago because everywhere I have read about them says how peaceful they are... but my dwarf gourami isn't! I had to take the other 1 back because he was so aggressive towards it and now he won't leave the platies alone and keeps nipping them even when they hide in plants. Any way to reduce aggression?? My tank has quite a few plants for its size and pleanty of hiding space (25g US).

* Secondly I was in a rush and forgot to check the fish in the bag before I got them home. When I got home I found 2 of the three were not in good condition. One of them has a very thin tail, a flattened dorsal fin and no underfins and is paler than the other 2 and smaller. Is this a sex difference? Nipping by other fish? Or does it sound like fin rot (can't find any good platy photos of fin rot)?

My third Platy has a crooked back and his fin is almost ontop of his head and is really short (we've called him Nemo!!).

I'm really annoyed because the fish shop wasn't very close but we went there because they have very good stock.

The staff were also not at all helpful and didn't know how big the fish get (they told me I could get a clown loach becuase they only grow to the size of their tank...fortunately I knew better thanks to this forum so didnt get one).

Anyway should I take the platies back?? Should they swap them/give my money back?

Thanks

Gemma

The best way to minimise DG agression is to get more girlies for him and they'll be able to hide as it's well planted.

If you get more girls, take him out, rearrange the planting somewhat if you can, put the girls in, let them settle, then add him back to the tank so he has to re-establish himself :D

If you're not happy with the condition of your platys, call the LFS and tell them. See what they have to say. It's only right that you get healthy fish from the shop!

Bought two girlie gouramis for my boy but he's just focused all his attention on chasing and nipping them. I have plenty of hiding places in the tank so I'm just going to leave them too it for now and hope he calms down!

Thanks for the advice

Gemma
