Okay. probably stupid question but I want to confirm my suspicions before I move forward on this. I have a 10US gal tank that I am using to restock several of my other tanks. This quarantine tank has been established for a while, having the normal concentration of healthy bacteria for about 5 fish. All readings are within normal limits (0, 0, 10).

The last group of fish have been removed, but it will be several weeks, perhaps more than a month, before I will be putting more fish in this tank. I know that I can "feed" the tank with some food to keep some amonia production, but I always worry about introducing a fungus. I would like to try daily spiking the tank with direct amonia to simulate fish - similar to fishless cycling - to keep the tank at a constant Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate production.

Now the question: from what I have read it appears that 2-3 drops of amonia per 10 gals is about the correct amount to simulate fish during the final stages of a cycle. Would I be able to add about that amount on a daily basis, thus maintaining the bacteria etc. at normal levels until I can introduce more fish again? Should it be more? Less? Anyone used this method before to simply maintain an empty tank and the filter media bacteria for a period of time before fish are introduced.

Not sure it is important but the tank uses a bio-wheel filter system.

nformation, suggestions and comments appreciated.

Thanks!

Why not just put the quar tank filter on your main tank to keep it cycled? When you need it, fill the quar tank, plug in the heater, transfer the filter, & add the fish.

I do this all the time with spare filters, I usually have 1 tank with a heater & airstone, with chlorinated water so it doesn't get nasty. If I come home with a late night purchase (fish happen!) I just add dechlor & a filter from another tank.

Thanks for the reply. I was probably just wanting to try something different in addition to having a touch of laziness- just didn't want to move the filter.

Appreciate your help and suggestions Tolak // Bradder
