Okay. probably stupid question but I want to confirm my suspicions before I move forward on this. I have a 10US gal tank that I am using to restock several of my other tanks. This quarantine tank has been established for a while, having the normal concentration of healthy bacteria for about 5 fish. All readings are within normal limits (0, 0, 10).
The last group of fish have been removed, but it will be several weeks, perhaps more than a month, before I will be putting more fish in this tank. I know that I can "feed" the tank with some food to keep some amonia production, but I always worry about introducing a fungus. I would like to try daily spiking the tank with direct amonia to simulate fish - similar to fishless cycling - to keep the tank at a constant Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate production.
Now the question: from what I have read it appears that 2-3 drops of amonia per 10 gals is about the correct amount to simulate fish during the final stages of a cycle. Would I be able to add about that amount on a daily basis, thus maintaining the bacteria etc. at normal levels until I can introduce more fish again? Should it be more? Less? Anyone used this method before to simply maintain an empty tank and the filter media bacteria for a period of time before fish are introduced.
Not sure it is important but the tank uses a bio-wheel filter system.
nformation, suggestions and comments appreciated.
Thanks!
