just add fish flakes.. shrimp might add a bad smell

Anything that will decay and produce ammonia can be used as an ammonia source. If you're already using bottled ammonia then the shrimp or flakes won't really do anything except raise the ammonia level higher. It won't speed the development of the bacteria colony.
