Fishless Cycling

I set up my tank yesterday and as i don't have ammonia i used fish food to cycle with, will this work? I was told it would?

do I have to keep adding a bit of fish food each day or is once enough?

It will work, but will probably take longer for the food to rot down. Try to get ammonia- its quicker and it doesn't sit at the bottom of your tank like fish food does.

Will definately work, that's how i did mine before i knew you could add pure ammonia. Like oohfeeshy says, just takes a bit longer.

i'm doing this until i get some platies to cycle with.
I can't get ammonia anywhere

Why not ?? .. Should be at your local market ??

Just make sure that when you add the Platies, you only add 2 or 3 at first so you don't overload the cycle.
