What do I actually need to start my fishless cycle ??

I've got the tank, substrate, filter, heater, test kit and some bog wood along with a few other bits and bobs... I've not yet bought a pump, plants(silk) or decor such as rocks. I'm just wondering if I can start my cycle with what I've got or should I get everything in my possession before starting.

it came with my test kit...

?
you mean api ammonia test?

not the same thing!

pure unscented ammonia is to emulate the fish poo in your fishless cycle

and the api ammonia test kit, tests your water for the existence of ammonia

have you read the beginers section?? re-read?

It dosent come with the test kit, its a seperate thing, you would need to get some household ammonia from somewhere like boots.

Just to stop you all jumping to conclusions, I said my ammonia was included and it is... I don't bother with those pet shop brands mine was a JBL tropical test kit costing £110 and the ammonia comes with it.

So am I ready to start cycling ??

i googled this..and couldnt find any that contained Ammonia? :/

I couldnt find any JBL testing kits for tropical that contained Ammonia or cost that much!

If you've got ammonia, a filter and test kits, yes you're ready.

What % ammonia do you have? Then you can work out how much you need to add :good:

You also need a quality dechlorinator, one that deals with chloramines and heavy metals, as well as chlorine.

so long as you have the right ammonia & equipment, the rest doesn't matter.

Time's awastin start the cycle.....

Fishkeepings a continued learning process for new&old...................

Depending on the size of your tank & your particular cycle & how frequently u plan to test, you may end up needing a 2nd batch of test kit (i did), so at £100ish a pop, you may wanna re-think that.......

i must be thriftier than i thought, i wud never pay £30ish for retail api test kits, i go online to pay half the £30ish,though i'm careful to check the expirey date.....
