After searching for weeks for some ammonia without sucess i was wandering if i could do this as a fishless cycle instead.

My small tank (2.7 gall) tank is going to be replaced by a 14 gall tank. All the fish in the 2.7 gall tank are to be moved to this bigger thank. I would like to do this sooner than later as it is overstocked. My question is can i run this tank from the word "go!" (or 1 day after) after setting it up presuming i've added aquasafe and tank water from another tank, without creating a new full cycle if i run the tank with the new filter alongside the mature cycled one? The mature cycled one is not meant for any tank bigger than a 3 gall tank, but i modified it to take an extra bioload which works perfectly! My new filter is an eheim ecco 2232.

Also, would it be best if i were to move the media into the new filter, or have them running in parralel changeover.

You cycle a filter not a tank. Move the filter media with you, but, the small culture of nitrobactin (sp) might not be able to keep up with a larger water volume for a couple of days. Just don't add more fish right away.

If you can move the fish AND the filter over, you could set the tank up and be fine. Moving the water won't help with the bacteria as there is only a very minimal amount of bacteria in the water. You could move it so that acclimamation is easier but because if the large difference in water volume, you are still going to have to take some time unless the tap water pH is very close to the tank water pH.

I would of thought moving the water also would be good, as if you started with fresh clean (dechlorniated) water there wouldn't be much bio load for the bacteria to live off? Moving the water too brings some bio load with it doesn't it?

the bacteria does not live in the water, just in the filter, the volume of water supported by the filter makes no difference to it's ability to deal with the bio load, the bio load is simply waste produced by the fish.

if you move the filter and fish over to the bigger tank they will be fine, it won't re-cycle you can then just increase stock slowly.

Cool thanks for all the feedback on this matter. The water was to lower the pH as i have CO2 pumping through on my current tank which lowers the pH. I'll post on my journal how it turns out :)

Thanks again.

Paul.

i just use fish food for cycling...bugger the expensive stuff lol

Actually, cycling with fish food is WAY more expensive than using ammonia. I bottle of ammonia at Walmart costs aout 49 cent and will probably cycle ten 75 gallon tanks. It would probably take at least a medium size container of fish food (at a few dollars) to cycle one tank that size.

ah ok i thought it was some expensive bottle stuff. oh well. still do-able if ya cant find any ammonia :)

Ammonia can be found at dollar chain stores and ood you have laying around. Both are pretty easy to get ahold of.

hahahaha....I know this comes up everyone once in a while ... but I can think of one source of ammonia that is absoultley FREE!!! hahahaha!

anyway, on that crazy note, just add the mature filter media to the new tanks filter, assuming you are not getting new fish for the 2.7 right away..

what fish are in the 2.7? it will make a difference if they are hardy or not and weather they can withstand the amonia rise.
