I'm currently fish-in cycling my 29g, but just started a fishless cycle on my sisters 20g. I was wondering if I doubled up the filter media in my sisters tank, when her fishless cycle finished, would I be able to put one of the filter medias into my tank and have a cycled tank?

In theory, it would help start up a new tank, but your tank might be cycled by then. But if it isn't then yes the media from a fishless cycle would help but you would always need to test to see that the media transfer was working.

I looked at the filter on the 20 and don't think I could fit two pieces of filter floss in there without impeding the flow. Instead, I wrapped the media (cut to fit floss) around an airstone and am floating it in the tank. Still effective?

I don't think that would be nearly as effective as having media in the flow of the filter. Perhaps if you put the tied bundle in the outflow from the filter?

Oh wow lol, that didn't even come to mind. I'll give that a shot now.
