Hey Everyone! Around three months ago a bought a 29g tank from WalMart. Anyway, I decided to cycle it first with ammonia before putting any fish in it after reading through these fourms. Well it has been cycling for over a month and a half now and I still don't have any Nitrite reading on my test kit. Ammonia is at 2-4ppm. This is what I have done so far...

Checked Ammonia used....it's pure
Checked test kit against another cycling tank....nitrites read on that one
Did a 90% water change, got the ammonia back up and waited again

Finally I decided to change to a Penguin Bio-Wheel 200b filter which is arriving in a couple days.

So anyone know what might be wrong? Just a poor quality filter put into the tank package?

I got nitrites and nitrates after about the first week. However, I'm at day 45 and my nitrites are finally beginning to come down.

I would triple check your ammonia doesn't have anything impure in it...and see if you can get some tank scrapings, plants, etc to seed your tank.
