Hi, can anyone please tell me the average time to cycle a tank. My plan is the wash a cycled filter in the new tank and add all the gravel I need from the cycled tank. Also can you keep neon tetra's in a tank that has just fully cycled. Thank's for any help on this subject. :)

If you have access to a muture filter can you not get some of the media from it? It'll be far better than just washing it out in your tank.

In theory, you should be able to stock a few small fish immediatly after putting mature media in, but I prefer to qualify it for a few days with either some household ammonia if you have any, or by letting a pinch of fish food break down until I have an ammonia reading, adding the mature media, and then testing to see if the ammonia has gone by the next morning. Hope that makes sense.

I'd never recommend neons for a new tank, even if the filter is fully cycled. I don't know why, but they just don't do well. I don't even quarantine mine anymore; I just lose too many, even with mature filter, gravel, plants and rocks taken from well established tanks. Better off waiting a few months rather than lose them.

Hi, is there any other types of tetra's you would recommend or are they all the same. What would you recommend i'm looking for something that don't grow big. :good:

alot say dont ad neons or cardinals...i just added cardinals today to a newly cycled tank...so you can follow my thread to see how they get on. from what i heard i expect to lose some, but so far 100% are still alive. Still i think it all depends on the many variables, tank setup, tank mates, maintenance skill, amount of time able to check water stats etc. I'm keeping a very close eye on them for 4 days, but i wouldn't imagine everyone can find that time.

Cardinals are much much tougher than neons. But I still lost 75% of my shoal to an outbreak of whitespot when all the other fish in my tank where fine. neons would of been wiped out.

I have been out today looking for ammonia I checked Tesco, Pound stretcher, and Boots, boots said they don't stock it but can order it in for 10 days time. Can you really cycle a tank with food some people have different views.
