I plan to get some ammonia to start cycling my tank. I was considering doing a cycle with fish until i heard about this much more humane methord. Can i use this http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Household-ammonia-500ml_923908/ ???

thanks

Absolutely, I'm currently using Homebase's Ammonia, but the Boots one is near enough exactly the same. Only thing to have in mind is that your local boots probably wont have it in stock, so either get it delivered to your local store, or your house. If you happen to live near Cardiff, UK I have a spare bottle I can sell.

Yep that's the one I have got ( now my mate is using it) I managed to pick it up in store :).

Might be worth ringing your local shop to see if they stock it, or you could go to homebase.

Good luck with the cycle :good:

Im 90% sure they will have it, our boots is in the trafford centre and its stupidly massive. It has 2 Giant floors lol, but will ring beforehand but thanks for the replys everyone = D . Quick question, will this 500ml be enough to cycle a 30L tank? and i dont need anything else right?

500ml should be more than enough as far as I'm aware, depending on the size of your tank though of course. I know in my tank (160Litres) I've only dosed once so far (which was 8ml) in the space of a week.
Regarding needing anything else - depends what you currently have... I.e a tank/heater/lights/plants. Main thing you'll need for the cycle is a good test kit so you can measure how the Ammonia falls and the nitrite/nitrates are rising. I personally use the API Master test kit, it's very highly rated on these forums.

+1. Have a read through the fishless cyclying page in the beginners section very good advice there :good:

Hi

Interesting to hear you're from Manchester....I'm based in Salford - currently close to finishing my fishless cycle (my log is somewhere on the forum if you are interested!)

I used the Boots at the Fort and they actually had it on special at the time so I got it for 45p! :) Its worked fine for my cycle and I'm almost finished with what feels like more than 2/3 of the bottle left - if you are anywhere near Salford you are quite welcome to have it if you can't get hold of any nearby.

Good luck with your fishless cycle...

Regards

Phil

where have you tried and what have you been asking for?

We got ours from a Hardware store - it is called "household cleaner" and lists only ammonia (9% solution). This same stuff is in B&Q etc.

The funny looks maybe because neat ammonia causes concerns because it was linked to terrorist attacks (I think)

On line:
http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Household-ammonia-500ml_923908/
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=household+ammonia&hl=en&prmd=ivnsfd&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1350&bih=884&wrapid=tlif131186811843210&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1249480844363333597&sa=X&ei=2IQxToRE0bnyA8jfnaEO&ved=0CFsQ8wIwAQ# - this is the stuff we use
also gets listed as: https://www.heritage-homeandgarden.co.uk/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=7828

Make sure that it only contains ammonia - one of the tests is to shake and see if it foams however I haven't seen it in a clear bottle to be able to do this - hence the contents list is more useful

Homebase, White bottle, with a plain orange band lable. Labled as "Household Ammonia" and list a few cleaning uses on the front. Should show "9.5%" on the bottom at the back.

HTH :)
