I hope this is the right place to post this ? I'm new here and not totally familar with everything yet. But my ? is....I was at my lfs and in the tank with the pink kissing gouramis were these tiny puffer looking fish that are really cute. I would like to get a couple of them but I am not sure about them because I have never seen them before. If anyone has any advice or knowledge of them to give I would really appreciate it. I figure if anyone knows anything, it would be here on this board. :D

Thanks!

if you have a community tank, don't get a puffer. the vast majority of them will fin-nip and mutilate your fish. they are generally best kept in a species tank.

also, the necessary water conditions are dependent on the species. what were they labeled in the lfs?

Best advice i can give you is best wait until u got the basics... start off with a few tropicals and see how it goes and then at a later date have puffers...... as you are a beginner and puffers are quite demanding.. As i would hate for you to buy puffers and they died through lack of knowledge of the specie.

Plenty of time for fishkeeping!!!! Unless someon on this site can reply and who has loads of experience maybe they could give you a hand in setting up the right + correct environment for them.

Goodluck and welcome to the friendlist forum around :D Hope you like it here and live your life here....lol

The fish didn't have a label under it for some reason and it's a large pet store and I didn't bother to wait around to get any info on them Sorry! But if they are gonna be terror in my tank I guess I don't want them anyway. I thought puffer fish were only saltwater anyway but these resembled them alot and were less then an inch in size. Are there freshwater puffers?

there certainly are!! i myself have the sweetest little S. American Puffer, which is a freshwater fish. if you're still curious, have a poke around in the oddballs section. there's a small library of information in there!

--EDIT--
and you can start with a freshwater puffer as easily as anything else. its just a matter of regular water changes, a properly stocked tank, and making certain he'll eat something. my puffer was one of the first fish i ever acquired, well before i knew anything about fish-keeping. the brackish species are a bit more difficult, but thats really only because maintain the water is a little more complicated.

I currently have a 20 gal which contains 5 angels, 1 large pink kissing gourami, 3 small kissing gouramis & 2 guppies. I was just curious on the species and how they are in a community tank and what comes along with them.

Thanks for the welcome bigfish :D

Thanks pica_nuttalli for the info ! I'll have to do some research on them to see what is best for them because they are so cute.

I'm pretty good with keeping fish. I've had my pink kissing gourami for almost 3 years. :D

LOL! yeah, the puffer would destroy your angels' fins. not the fish for that tank!
Ok...I guess if I do decide to get them a separate tank would be better lol

Thanks for the advice.
