Hi there,

When i got home last night 6 neon tetras, 1 clown loach & 1 scissor tail died. This morning i found one of the red gouramis dead. The other two gouramis dont look well and have not been eating and sitting in the same spot for the past few days.

I had preformed a water change 3 days ago and the water is now crystal clear (i was having issue with it, but now is fine) here are my readings.
PH: 7.2
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 1.5ish
Temp: 26

When i got the fish out of the water and checked them, nothing looked wrong. No spots, their colour was bright however have not been eating and just not acting well.

I have not sprayed any chemicals near it, although did put some bioclear into the water when doing a water change.

Could you please help me decipher what this is as i dont want to lose the other fish!

Thanks!

What issues were you having with your water? Maybe they died from something related to that?

Initially it went cloudy, sort of milky and then went very very green. This lasted about 3-4 weeks. I did 80% water change followed by a 3 day blackout then another 80% water change. The water then stayed cloud, but i kept on doing my normal water changes and now is crystal clear.

did you test the water during that time to see if the cloudy water was caused by high ammonia levels? how long has your tank been set up/fully cycled?

Yea ammonia was at 0 at that time.
Have had it up and running for about 5 months.

okay so just spoke to some other people with fish tanks in my area and they have said that they to have lost fish after their last water change. turns out that since my state is in a drought they put more chemicals into the tap water to make it cleaner. therefore the chlorine (and other chemicals) are really high.

With saying this is there any product to check chemicals that are in tap water eg. chlorine??

would it be possible to just use bottled water? if so do i need to add de-chlorinator??

i used to use bottled water for my tank b/c the tap water wasn't that great and i still added de-chlorinator.

You could try getting one of those brita water filters that hooks up right to your faucet that way you dont have to keep buying bottles of water

How many gallons is the tank.
Has your ph changed.

How are the fish now?

There are chlorine testing kits available, we have one at work for the swimming pool. Basically a tablet test with a little testing machine that gives you an exact reading.

Not sure how much they are, ill have a look.

they seem happy however did have a female bristle nose die.

for the next water change i will be using rain water.

Do you think i would need to add any chemicals?? it should be fine yea?
