and how does it work etc? how much can u expect to get compared to teh price they sell tehm for etc?

Most shops will offer you between 1/4 and 1/3 of the fishes retail value in store credit for returned fish.

no chain stores will allow them for the most part, but just about every small lfs i've asked about will give you 1/3 of the resale value as CFC stated

My lfs has given me retail value on any fish I've taken back. From the other posts I'm guessing that I'm pretty lucky.

theres two lfs i use... the first one wont take any because all their tanks are interconnected so they cant quarantine new fish but when i asked they suggested i try another lfs who normally would....they give me 1/2 of what they will sell them for and have taken anything i've asked them to so far.... plus now i have the advantage of using both on a regular basis which makes sure i get a good mix of parentage in case i decide to breed any.... :)

i would always suggest you ask and try your luck because if they are any good then even if they cant themselves they will suggest somewhere that will....

retail amount that you paid for them or retail amount they could sell them for?

if they give you the full amount that they can sell it for, you are very lucky!

with one lfs around here it depends on the reason. if the fish is too aggressive adn has attacked other fish. ful retail
if the fish is too big for your tank - 1/3 or 1/4 retail price

We take in fish but we don't give anything for them. At the end of the day, we have to quarentine it in a tank on its own for a 7 day minimum and feed it etc.
If someone has a decent number of one type of fish or something particularly rare then we ocasionally offer credit but usually most people are just glad to see that their fish will be well looked after instead of flushed down the toilet.

As said, it sort of depends on the shop. The retail chain shops will take returns if you recently bought the fish from them, but not if its a fish you've had for some time. Smaller, privately owned shops, if they are able to house them, will usually give store credit. The shop I gives the 1/3 of the selling price as mentioned above, for most fish. Livebearers, they may give you a couple dollars credit for a large number. The shop I use does not put owner-turn ins into the regular tanks, they have special discounted tanks that they put them in, buyer buys them at own risk. So it can vary by fish.

Your best bet is just call around to your lfs, ask about their policies, ask if they'll take any of the fish you have and whether they'll give store credit/cash, or even just accept them as a donation (example, the shop I use won't give store credit for bettas, but will take unwanted ones in as donations which they will then sell).

I traded in a cichlid of my dad's, and got him 3 new fish for his tank. The new fish were $2.89 each, and the next time I was in the store I saw his fish labeled for $8.99. $2.89 x 3 = $8.67, so it was pretty close to retail value.
