OK. I'll go ahead and ask. I probably should figure out how I can know for sure before I find new homes for all those cory fry that were spawned in the same tank with the lumpy fish.
I mentioned before that I had a black neon with a lump or 2 under it's skin. Later one of my 3 minnows was acting sick and got better without meds, but now it has a lump or 2 just like the tetra. I would like to think that this is a common harmless occurence that just happens as some fish get older, but if it is contagious and bad, I should know. I read that TB is very contagious, so if only 2 fish have the same symptoms after months of exposure in my comunity tank, am I safe? Is it just dormant and waiting to strike? How scary is it? What would I need to do to find out for sure and or be sure thay are not contagious? Right now all I have is 2 unrelated fish in 1 tank with tiny unchanging lumps on their sides and no other symptoms, but there are a lot of others that have been exposed, and for all i know, it might affect different fish in different ways. I think someone suggested a bacterial infection. I don't really want to treat a lot of apparently healthy fish, but if it is an infection, should it go away with antibiotics? Is there anything specific I should try, or should I look for a real life fish vet and see if they can do a test or something? i want to just not worry about it, but then I don't want to spread it if it is something bad.

I didn't get back online to check for answers for a while, and it looks like I don't have answers anyway. I just talked to a guy today at one of my favorite lps's, and he wants "tiger endlers" and cories and apple snails. I was so excited about all the fishy possiblities, I forgot to ask his opinion about the lumpy fisk in the same tank with most of the critters i would offer them. So... Do I need to do more research and get a definitive diagnosis, or should I just figure that fish grow lumps as they age and if there was something bad and contagious I would't have so many healthy fish and the store can deal with it if there is an invisible problem?

The color looks good on my black neon, which I have had about a year, and it had the lumps the whole time, as far as I know. The minnow acted a little funny briefly a couple of months ago I think, and ever since then it is a little darker color than my other 2 white clouds, but OK, maybe a little less smooth color near the lumps. It's wierd how both totally unrelated fish have 2 visible lumps each, both on the same side, and both right on the color stripes.
I do have 1 regular neon. I think i bought 2 at the same time as the other tetras, and they both died, so I traded them for live ones, and one of them died after a couple more weeks or so. Now my lone neon hangs around the glolites mostly, but after a year, wouldn't there be more affected fish if it was contagious?

from the link ntd might be even scarier than TB or almost anything. i really hope that's not what it is and I guess i should mention it to anyone I give fish to and maybe show the lumpy ones to someone at the store. I was worried about the behaviour of the minnow a couple of times and thought it might not make it becase it would just hover in 1 spot and sort of rock almost as if it had hiccups, but now it acts normal again. The tetras all look and act very healthy as far as I can tell. I think the guppies and danios that died in that tank died of old age, and lately the only dead things I noticed in there wete a couple of apple snails. If I did have ntd, how long would it take to kill an affected fish or others in the same tank?
